You can reach Malealea Lodge by self-drive or public transport. For self-drive, the road is tarred all the way except for the final 7 km, which is a gravel road. A 4×4 vehicle is not essential, but a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended for a more comfortable drive — along with a good spirit of adventure. Local residents regularly travel this road in standard vehicles. The final stretch typically takes 35–45 minutes. We also recommend not relying on Google Maps, as mobile data coverag… ### Do I need a 4×4 vehicle? No, you don't need a 4x4, but , pease note that the final 7km to the lodge is a gravel road. While a 4 x 4 is not required, we highly recommend a high-clearance vehicle for a smoother journey - and a "spirit of adventure". You can expect the last 7kms to takes approximately 35-45 minutes. ### Which border post should I use? If you are coming from Bloemfontein or the south, we recommend using the Van Rooyens Hek / Wepener border post, which is open from 06:00 to 22:00 and is generally quieter and easier to navigate. If you are travelling from the north, the Maseru Bridge border post is the most direct option. Please be aware that this border can experience long queues at peak times, and traffic can be heavy when driving through Maseru city. We offer do offer free Wi-Fi at the lodge. The Wi-Fi reaches most of the rooms, except for the campsite. ### Will my SA sim card work in Lesotho? Make sure you are on roaming before you enter Lesotho. If you are not on roaming, internet connectivity will be lost after crossing the border. We recommend you buy an Econet Sim card from a registered agent when you cross the border. A new Econet Tower has been installed in the Malealea Valley with 4G connectivity. Malealea Lodge is running on 100% Solar Energy In 2016 we made the switch from diesel-guzzling generator power to solar power. This greatly reduced our fuel usage, protecting our air and the climate. The conversion also had the added benefit of completely transforming the guest experience here. We can now provide electricity from morning until night whereas before we only ran the power from 5:00 PM until 10:00 PM. No Electric: Blankets, Hairdryers, Flat- irons, Kettles, Toasters, Heaters, Irons… ### Are linen and towels provided? Yes, linen and towels are provided in all rooms. If you are on a budget, you can bring your own sleeping bags and stay in the Basotho huts with communal bathrooms at a reduced rate. ### Are there camping facilities? Yes, there is big campsite area with 2 sets of shared ablution facilities. Each set has 2 showers and 2 toilets separate for gents and ladies. There is also a sheltered are with dishwashing facility. Bring all your own camping gear. ### What activities can I do at Malealea Lodge? All activities can be booked at a moment's notice. It takes about 30 minutes to get the horses ready for pony trekking and your hiking guide can be arranged within 10 minutes. ### Do I need to take guide with me on hiking trails? We highly recommend taking a hiking guide with you on the trails. The routes are not marked and its very easy to get lost. ### What is there to do inside the lodge grounds? Yes, the lodge is very family orientated. There is plenty of space for children to run around and play. The rooms do not have built-in heating, as the lodge operates fully on solar energy. For a touch of old-fashioned comfort, hot water bottles are available, and each room is well supplied with extra blankets and duvets to ensure a cosy night’s sleep. ### Is there a restaurant? Malealea Lodge Meals Breakfast is served from 8:00 – 9:30 every morning and includes a variety of cereals, fruits, and breads, as well as fried eggs and bacon. Tea, coffee, and juice are also provided and served from 07:30am. (Please let the kitchen ladies know in advance if you would like an early breakfast or a packed breakfast). In summer, dinner is served at 7:00 PM, after the band and choir have finished their sunset performance, and includes a variety of meat and vegetable dishes, as well… ### What methods of payment do you accept? We accept Visa and Mastercard and also ZAR cash and Maloti cash. ### Do I need to pay any fees when crossing the border into Lesotho? Yes, foreign passport holders (including South Africans) must pay an Attraction and Tourism Levy of R100 per adult (over 13) and a toll gate fee of R90 per vehicle. Payments are cash only. ### What documents do I need when driving a South African-registered vehicle into Lesotho? You need to carry a certified copy of your vehicle registration certificate in your car and keep a copy of the original on your phone. Make sure your car and driver's licenses are up to date. Lesotho does not have a 21 day grace period for expired licenses ### What documents do children U/18 need to enter Lesotho Children U/18 need full unabridged birth certificates when travelling with their parents.
