This morning at Malealea Lodge, while the world is sitting glued to their screens awaiting the next great moon launch, we quietly conducted a mission of our own… It began with an unexpected discovery: a highly organised, buzzing “alien colony” had taken up residence inside one of our rooms. Not paying rent. Not checking out. And definitely not following housekeeping schedules. Enter our elite team, Leon (Thabang) Sesler and Tleki Musi Dressed...
Chasing Horizons: Trail Running the Malealea Mountains with Phoka
Meet Phoka Koatja – Our Barman, Our Mountain Goat 🏔️
By day, you’ll find Phoka behind the bar at Malealea Lodge — mixing drinks, sharing stories, and greeting guests with his easy smile. But when his shift ends and the mountains call, he becomes something else entirely.
Phoka runs.
Not just for fitness, but for the pure love of the mountains.
He has conquered the legendary 50 km “Little Down Run” from Semonkong to Malealea, finishing comfortably alongside the leaders — a true testament to his strength, endurance, and deep connection to this land.
But for Phoka, that’s just the beginning.
In his spare time, he’s out there exploring, carving out new routes across the rugged terrain with trail experts like Jacques Mouton who arranges the yearly MUT (Mountain Ultra-Trail) in George. Phoka knows these mountains like few others do — every ridge, every valley, every hidden path.
They call him a mountain goat… and for good reason.
Sure-footed, steady, and strong, Phoka moves across the landscape with confidence and ease. Whether it’s a gentle trail or a challenging climb, he leads the way with quiet determination and a love for the journey.
And the best part? You can run with him.
If you’re looking for something truly special — not just a run, but an experience — Phoka is available to guide you through the breathtaking mountains of Lesotho.

Every now and then, we receive feedback about our food that makes me pause, smile a little, and reflect on where we are — and what we offer. Over the years, we’ve been told our food is “not African enough.” More recently, we’ve been told it’s “not European enough.” And now, occasionally, that the dining room is not decorated enough. In many ways, that perfectly captures the unique space Malealea Lodge occupies.
Dear Partners, It has come to our attention that visitors are stopping along the road to distribute sweets and biscuits to local children. While we understand this is done with good intentions, we must urgently ask that this practice stop immediately. Over many years, we have worked closely with community leaders and chiefs to discourage roadside begging. Unfortunately, these actions are undoing that progress and creating serious risks: Safety: Children are now...
