One of my best traveling experiences in Africa. The place is very welcoming from the moment you arrive - everyone feels like a friend, whether it's talking around the fire in the bar or going on a hike. The lodge feels connected to the community and you get a great understanding of Basotho culture and life in Lesotho. The hikes are amazing, so are the village walk and just relaxing at the beautiful lodge. I will definitely recommend to everyone going to Lesotho, and will come back myself.

It was absolutely fantastic to arrive at a place where the owners have clearly thought through every detail. The place is very pleasant, with a garden designed in an appealing and playful way. The food was excellent, and the activities were equally engaging. I especially appreciated how the surrounding community was included, most of the staff were local, as were the guides, the horses, and the handicrafts. It truly gave a sense of being part of the local environment. I would gladly come back!

Malealea Lodge is the most beautiful resort in Lesotho. This is my second time vacationing here. The accommodation is beautiful and quiet, the rooms are clean and cozy, and every room has Wi-Fi. There are performances every evening at the resort. It has 24-hour electricity and water supply, as well as a self-service kitchen. The staff are very warm and friendly, and the food is delicious. The price is not expensive either.

Our stay at the lodge was relaxed and we felt privileged to spend time in such a magical setting among the mountains. There are various activities on offer, hiking, cycling - we went pony trekking – and a cultural shop to browse the local crafts. Each evening we were treated to a free performance from the excellent Basotho singers and musicians. One evening I also enjoyed the atmosphere with the semi-final of the AFCON Cup on a big screen. Most memorable for us was the friendliness and helpful attitude of the staff who all appeared to enjoy working at the lodge and contributing to a positive community spirit. We’ll stay longer next time!

There is a feeling of being welcomed home to a beloved place as soon as you reach the gates. Wonderful meals in shared community dining and a bar where you might meet your next friend for life. Also opportunities to learn about Basotho culture in a way that's beneficial to the local community. It's a big journey to get here, but if you are rugged enough to do it, you will be well rewarded.

I was lucky enough to have met some of these people at the amazing lodge that I called home for a week!

Sana, Fifi, Kuti, Phoka, Lucky, Bob and all the beautiful ladies in the kitchen are only a view of the amazing people that makes Malealea Lodge the most wonderful place to go visit!

The rooms are spotless and bedding beautifully clean. The grounds are beautiful, lushes, green and bursts of colourful flowers everywhere. The view is mesmerizing!

The food is the best you can get in Lesotho! Made with love and care served in the dining room where you get to meet so many new people with great stories!

When an Englishman arrived at this hidden valley in the early 19th century and created a trading station, that in time became the Lodge, he placed a plaque at the mountain pass which gives access to to the area stating "Wayfarer pause and look upon a gateway of Paradise". This sums up what is today a truly outstanding experience for those who are priveleged to stay a Malealea Lodge. Thepart owner/ manager, Jackie, described to me how she had grown, up since early childhoood, with the majority of her staff, recluted from the local community, explaining the feeling of family that prevails among them and the obvious pride they take in their daily chores and how evryone of them makes the guests feel so welcome. For anyone visiting Lesotho a few nights here should be a must visit and for those visting South Africa it is reason enough for them to include Malealea in their itinerary.

Dude. What an epic adventure in a stunning country.

Went on a 4 day, 3 night trekking hike and it was AWESOME! Went with one friend, and it was just the two of us and our guide. We went on the Malealea, Ribaneng, Ketane, Sekoting route. The days were long and it was not an easy hike. Approximately 8 hours of hiking a day, approximately 15 miles a day based on what my watch said. We had to bring all of our clothing and food that was carried on the pack horse. We rented sleeping bags from the lodge. Each night at sunset we arrived in a small village, cooked dinner on a 1 burner stove we brought on the horse, then unrolled our sleeping bags and slept on a thin mat on the floor of a mud hut.

Most important things to know: BRING WARM CLOTHING (thank god it wasn't raining while we there or honestly it would have been miserable). Bring baby wipes (there is no running water or electricity the whole time... ie, no showers). Bring headlamp/flashlight and candles/matches (to light the hut at night to cook by). Bring a day pack to pack your lunch in and layers (you can't access the saddle bags easily during the hike).

Our guide Rampeh was very sweet. It was a joy getting to know him and a shame to hear that most people on the tour don't talk to him or bother to get to know him. I would suggest anyone visiting this country take the opportunity to try and learn the language and culture!

Get excited to see gorgeous views of meadows, sheep, cattle, waterfall, sprawling mountains and hills on this trek.

The lodge itself was so much more beautiful than I anticipated. They have great dinner each night (not included) and would suggest seeing the choir and band each night that perform local music! Not to miss.

It's definitely a matter of personal taste. The excursions to the village were very pleasant and interesting. The food was tasty and plentiful, and the service was very attentive. I found the breakfast a bit odd: the muesli was pre-portioned into glasses or cups, which I personally found a little strange. The fruit was canned and then supplemented with fresh apples or bananas. A shame, really. It's fine in good weather, but a definite no-go when it rains—too boring; there's nothing to do.

Malealea Lodge is a nature-based, off-the-beaten-track destination, designed to offer an authentic and sustainable experience of rural Lesotho. Our rooms are simple by design, in keeping with our commitment to the environment and the local community.

Regarding breakfast, the muesli served in little glass jars and colouful cups is intended as a special individual touch, to keep things fresh and beautifully presented instead of using large communal bowls. As for the fruit salad, being in such a remote mountain location, it’s not always easy to keep a wide range of fresh produce on hand — but we do our best to offer a mix of tinned and fresh fruit whenever possible.

For rainy days, there’s plenty to enjoy too — a games room with table tennis, pool, darts, and a selection of board games like Scrabble, Risk, Rummy, and cards. There’s also free Wi-Fi available, full DSTV in the bar, and a range of books to read and swap.
