Sustainability

Sustainability is not just a buzzword at Malealea Lodge—it’s a way of life.

Lesotho is a land of breathtaking beauty, and we are deeply committed to protecting it. From the energy we use to how we treat our waste, we’re constantly working to reduce our impact and operate as responsibly as possible.

In 2016, we transitioned from relying on a diesel-powered generator to a solar energy system. This shift dramatically reduced our fuel consumption and emissions, improving air quality and supporting climate protection. Thanks to this system, we can now provide electricity 24 hours a day—an enormous improvement from when we could only run power from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Our solar panels charge a bank of deep-cycle batteries that store energy for use throughout the day and night. To keep this system functioning reliably—especially during cloudy weather or periods of high demand—we do still need to run a backup diesel generator from time to time. The generator’s role is now mainly to recharge the batteries and stabilize the system, ensuring that guests enjoy consistent, around-the-clock electricity while dramatically reducing our overall reliance on fossil fuels.

We also source our water from a natural mountain spring. Under normal conditions, it’s chemical-free and safe to use for washing, bathing, and brushing teeth. However, after heavy storms (when sediment can enter the spring) or during drought (when we supplement the supply from other sources), minimal treatment may be required. For drinking, we recommend using bottled water, which is available for purchase at the bar.

Our community relies heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods. One of Lesotho’s most pressing environmental issues is soil erosion, which is made worse by the use of harsh chemical inputs. In response, we use a natural wastewater system that filters solid waste through a constructed wetland of local plants. This helps protect our soil, water table, and surrounding landscape.

As a guest, you are part of this shared responsibility. Please help us care for our environment by using water thoughtfully and ensuring that all waste is disposed of in the bins provided.

Our valley is a treasure. With your help, we can keep it that way for generations to come.
